Gille's background

As a child Gilles already had an irrepressible urge to express through singing, and by the age of fourteen had built his own guitar and started to compose his own songs. By sixteen he was singing in bars around Paris. As his musical development unfolded, Gilles studied other instruments including cello, violin, sitar, tablas as well as wind instruments such as trumpet and flutes, attaining a fluency in all of them. Eventually Gilles heard in Afghanistan a voice whose resonance was so rich that it carried even outside without the aid of a microphone. This triggered Gilles’ search to uncover that voice in himself and later in the students who have been attending his workshops over the years.

The workshop

The process of uncovering the voice is always rooted in the physical body, the whole of which becomes the instrument which we play. The workshops have a solid ‘body work’ content, various gentle but powerful centering and posturing exercises which explore the gravity and balance of the physical body. By combining these exercises with specific control of breathing, the voice begins to put down solid roots and its full resonance is able to manifest. Just to sing and hold a Sa with a fully resonating voice can be a rich experience both for the one singing and those who are receiving the sound!

We sing our own improvisations using Sa Re Ga, songs written by Gilles, Ragas, improvised duets and trios in high voice or low voice, songs which we bring with us....the field is wide! Each workshop unfolds in a unique and spontaneous way, and is always interesting, rich and fulfilling!

Sa Re Ga

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa are the ancient Sanskrit names for the seven basic notes of the musical scale ( akin to the Doh Re Me of the Western musical tradition). Unlike in Western music, these notes are actually voiced when singing the Indian Raga, which is mainly improvised around various combinations of this scale.

Using Sa Re Ga as a basis, it does not take long before we can sing simple improvisations within this structure. Although Sa Re Ga is naturally associated with Raga it also lends itself to creative improvisation in other non-Indian genres and is a central facet to all the work done in our workshops.

The Indian Raga

The Indian Raga provides a unique structure for expressing through the voice, and especially for improvisation. The beauty of the Indian Raga is that by choosing only certain notes of the scale and omitting others, or by using them only in a very specific way, each Raga sets a particular mood which the voice can explore; flowing like a river, slow and meandering in places, sparkling in others or building to a waterfall of sound until it finally merges into the sea.

Although it may take a great artist to manifest the full glory of the raga, its beauty lies in its simplicity and discipline. With very little experience, even a beginner can capture the essence of the raga without the need for embellishment or virtuosity by remaining in the quality of the sound, a resonance which is felt in the body of the one producing the sound and the one receiving it.

Cosmic Theatre

Unique in Gilles’ work is a new musical artform which he has developed from the roots of Raga. Especially in the early years spent in theatre, Gilles learned that to achieve full expression in singing, we are entering the field of drama where we dig deep to bring out passion, anger, yearning, joy and sorrow and the more subtle nuances of feeling.

In ‘Cosmic Theatre’we use Sa Re Ga as a platform to sing in groups of 2 or 3 (or more) combining singing with movement to communicate and express to and with each other. Each ‘performance’ becomes a unique experience of creativity on many levels.
